# Evidence and Chain of Custody

The DOJ evidence record is authoritative. The serialized inventory item represents physical custody.

## Package types

| Package                   | Inventory item             | Typical use                                    |

| Biological Evidence Swab  | `nwrrp_evidence_swab`      | Blood, DNA, fingerprints, biological material  |

| Sealed Evidence Bag       | `nwrrp_evidence_bag`       | Trace and general physical evidence            |

## Custody workflow

1. Verify evidence number, case number, seal number, and package status.
2. Keep the serialized item in the assigned detective's inventory.
3. Do not drop, trade, discard, or destroy evidence through ordinary inventory actions.
4. Submit through Central Evidence Intake when appropriate.
5. Confirm the item leaves inventory and the custody event is recorded.

A missing inventory item does not delete the legal record; it creates a custody discrepancy that must be reported and corrected.
